Core Training Terms You'll Encounter Most

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)
A self-reported scale — typically 1 to 10 — that describes how hard exercise feels at a given moment. An RPE of 5 feels moderate; a 9 or 10 is near-maximum effort. It's a practical tool for calibrating intensity without needing heart rate monitors or lab tests.
HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
A training format alternating short bursts of high-effort exercise with recovery periods. The work intervals are typically performed near maximum effort, making HIIT time-efficient for improving cardiovascular fitness. It is not inherently superior to other cardio formats — it's one tool among many.
Progressive Overload
The principle of gradually increasing the challenge placed on muscles over time — through more weight, reps, sets, or reduced rest — so the body continues to adapt. Without progressive overload, training plateaus are common.
Compound Movement
An exercise that involves multiple joints and muscle groups working simultaneously, such as a squat, deadlift, or push-up. Compound movements are generally more time-efficient and are prioritized in most strength programs.
Isolation Exercise
An exercise targeting a single muscle group with minimal involvement from others — for example, a bicep curl. Isolation work is used to address specific weaknesses or for targeted muscle development, and is typically programmed after compound movements.
One-Rep Max (1RM)
The maximum weight a person can lift for a single repetition of a given exercise with proper form. It's used as a benchmark to calculate training loads — for instance, working at 70% of your 1RM for a prescribed number of reps.
Superset
Performing two exercises back-to-back with little or no rest between them. Supersets can pair opposing muscle groups (e.g., biceps and triceps) or similar ones, and are often used to increase training efficiency or volume.
Hypertrophy
The increase in muscle cell size resulting from consistent resistance training. Hypertrophy-focused training typically involves moderate weights, higher rep ranges, and sufficient recovery — and is the primary goal of bodybuilding-style programs.
Aerobic vs. Anaerobic
Aerobic exercise relies on oxygen to sustain effort over time — think steady jogging or cycling. Anaerobic exercise involves short, intense bursts where the body outpaces its oxygen supply, such as sprinting or heavy lifting. Both systems contribute to overall fitness.
Deload
A planned period of reduced training volume or intensity, allowing the body to recover from accumulated fatigue. Deloads are a normal part of structured programs, not a sign of weakness or lost progress.
Mobility
The ability to move a joint actively through its full range of motion with control. Mobility differs from flexibility (passive range of motion) because it requires muscular engagement. Poor mobility can limit performance and increase injury risk.
Training Volume
The total amount of work performed, often calculated as sets × reps × weight. Managing volume appropriately — not too little, not too much — is a key variable in program design and recovery.
A note on progressive overload: this principle is central to almost every well-designed program. Gradual increases can come through adding weight, doing more reps, reducing rest time, or improving technique — not just loading more weight on the bar.
