Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose — a simple sugar that cells use as their main energy source. The brain alone relies almost exclusively on glucose to function, making carbohydrates especially important for cognitive performance and mood stability.

Protein: Building Blocks for Nearly Everything

Protein is made up of amino acids, which serve as the structural material for muscles, organs, skin, enzymes, and hormones. Of the 20 amino acids the body uses, nine are considered essential — meaning the body cannot manufacture them and must obtain them through food.

Most people think of protein primarily in terms of muscle repair, and that role is real: after physical activity, the body uses amino acids to rebuild muscle fibers that were stressed during exercise. But protein's responsibilities extend much further. It is essential for immune function (antibodies are proteins), oxygen transport (hemoglobin is a protein), and the production of enzymes that drive virtually every chemical reaction in the body.

Protein also has a notable effect on satiety — it tends to be more filling per calorie than carbohydrates or fat, which can make it useful for managing appetite as part of a balanced diet.

Animal sources such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy are considered complete proteins because they contain all nine essential amino acids. Many plant sources — with the exception of soy, quinoa, and a few others — are incomplete on their own, but a varied plant-based diet that includes legumes, grains, and nuts can supply all essential amino acids over the course of a day.

Getting Complete Protein on a Plant-Based Diet

The type of fat consumed matters considerably. Unsaturated fats — found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, and fatty fish — are associated with cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory benefits in the research literature. Saturated fats, found in red meat and full-fat dairy, appear to have more mixed effects on heart health when consumed in excess. Balance, Not Elimination

Popular diets often frame macronutrients as adversaries — cut the carbs, fear the fat, maximize the protein. Current nutritional science does not support eliminating any macronutrient category for the general population. Each serves functions the others cannot fully replicate, and long-term restriction of any one can have unintended health consequences.

What does matter is the overall quality and balance of the diet. Choosing whole-food sources over heavily processed alternatives within each macronutrient category consistently shows benefit in the research literature.
